Why Work for the United Nations
Working for the UN is not just a job — it’s a calling. Interning with the United Nations offers a once-in-a-lifetime opportunity to contribute meaningfully to international development and diplomacy while gaining experience in a uniquely multicultural and professional setting. The UN internship program allows young professionals and students to work alongside seasoned international civil servants and gain firsthand insight into the organization’s work and impact.
Interns are exposed to high-level policy discussions, contribute to real-world projects, and participate in initiatives that help advance the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs). Whether your interests lie in economics, human rights, environmental science, communications, or law, there’s a place for you at the UN. Beyond the professional experience, an internship here is also a personal growth journey — one that sharpens your skills, expands your network, and broadens your worldview.
Key Responsibilities
The responsibilities of a UN intern vary depending on the department or agency they are assigned to, but common tasks include:
- Conducting research and preparing analytical reports or briefing notes
- Assisting with the drafting and editing of official documents and publications
- Supporting planning and coordination of events, meetings, and high-level conferences
- Managing databases, handling communications, and updating web content
- Participating in team meetings and contributing fresh ideas and perspectives
Interns are expected to be proactive, detail-oriented, and capable of managing multiple tasks in a dynamic and multicultural environment.
Who Can Apply?
The UN Internship Programme is designed for highly motivated individuals who are interested in contributing to the goals of the United Nations. Applicants must meet the following criteria:
- Be enrolled in, or have recently completed, a graduate or postgraduate degree (Master’s or PhD). Some internships may accept final-year undergraduate students.
- Be proficient in English or French (the two working languages of the UN); knowledge of other official UN languages like Spanish, Arabic, Chinese, or Russian is an asset.
- Demonstrate academic excellence, a strong interest in international issues, and a commitment to the values of the UN.
- Be at least 18 years old at the time of application.
Note: UN internships are generally unpaid, so candidates must be able to support themselves financially during the internship period.
Application Process
The UN internship selection process is competitive and can take several weeks or months. Candidates are assessed based on academic qualifications, relevant skills and experience, language proficiency, and their motivation. Most internships are offered on a rolling basis, and each department or agency has its own timelines and requirements.
Shortlisted candidates may be contacted for an interview or additional documentation. A successful application requires attention to detail and a tailored approach for each role you apply for.
