The World Health Organization (WHO) is inviting qualified candidates to apply for the position of Deputy Head of Country Office in New Delhi, India. This is a full-time, P6 level international post on a fixed-term contract for one year, with a strong possibility of extension. The deadline to apply is July 8, 2025.
About the Role
As part of WHO’s mission to support national health priorities and contribute to global public health action, this position plays a pivotal role in managing and leading the operations of WHO’s Country Office in India. The Deputy Head will assist the WHO Representative (WR India) in delivering strategic technical and operational guidance in support of India’s public health agenda.

Key Responsibilities
Under the direct supervision of WR India and guidance from the Regional Office’s Programme Director, the incumbent will:
- Provide expert programmatic advice to support the implementation of India’s national health strategies.
- Ensure alignment between WHO’s leadership priorities and the national health system, as guided by the Country Cooperation Strategy (CCS).
- Manage performance standards, planning frameworks, and accountability mechanisms across the WHO India office.
- Oversee all technical activities in the office, supervising team leaders and ensuring alignment with WHO’s thematic areas including health systems, communicable and noncommunicable diseases, and emergencies.
- Offer strategic support to health-related responses in emergencies, recovery efforts, and crisis-affected regions.
- Oversee efficient use of WHO’s technical, human, and financial resources within India.
- Represent WR India when necessary at official meetings with the government, development partners, and UN agencies.
- Build strong collaborations with national counterparts, donors, and stakeholders to foster sustainable public health programs.
Required Qualifications
- Education: Advanced university degree (Master’s or above) in Medicine, Public Health, Social Sciences, or Management. A PhD and/or specialized training in epidemiology, public administration, or health management is desirable.
- Experience: At least 10 years of relevant professional experience in developing and managing public health programs, with significant exposure in international or multilateral institutions. Experience managing multi-disciplinary and multicultural teams is essential.
- Skills: Proven leadership, analytical thinking, and capacity to manage diverse teams. Strong interpersonal communication and diplomacy in multicultural settings.

Language Proficiency
- Fluency in English is required.
- Knowledge of other official UN languages is considered an asset.

Remuneration & Benefits
WHO offers competitive compensation for international staff. The gross base salary for this position starts at USD 116,095 per annum, supplemented by a monthly post adjustment of approximately USD 3,299, depending on cost of living in New Delhi.
