Internship Overview
The internship is based in the Office of the Director, within the Division of Regional Bureaus and Field Coordination. This division manages the coordination of UNIDO’s five Regional Bureaus, covering Africa, the Arab States, Asia and the Pacific, Europe and Central Asia, and Latin America and the Caribbean. The selected intern will gain hands-on experience in how international programs are planned, coordinated, and implemented across multiple regions.
The duration of the internship is between three to six months, on a full-time basis. It is designed for students or recent graduates who are eager to gain practical experience within the UN system and learn about industrial development from a global perspective.
Key Responsibilities
- Support the daily activities of the Regional Bureaus and assist the Director’s Office in managing operational tasks.
- Prepare and review documents, reports, and submissions required by other UNIDO departments.
- Assist with drafting correspondence, coordinating inputs from regional and field offices, and preparing briefing materials for meetings.
- Help organize meetings and events involving Member States and other development partners, including writing meeting notes and summaries.
- Contribute to capacity-building and training initiatives for field offices.
- Support activities related to country programming, UN field reform, and regional coordination efforts.
- Produce an end-of-internship report summarizing learning achievements and recommendations.
Candidate Requirements
Applicants must be enrolled in a master’s program or have completed a bachelor’s degree within the last year. Fields of study such as international relations, political science, economics, or development studies are preferred.
Excellent written and verbal communication skills in English are required, while knowledge of another UN language (Arabic, Chinese, French, Russian, or Spanish) is an asset. Candidates should have good computer literacy, especially in Microsoft Office, and demonstrate a strong interest in global development and multilateral cooperation.
Internship Conditions
The internship will take place at UNIDO Headquarters in Vienna. It is a non-staff assignment, meaning interns are not considered UNIDO employees. Interns receive a monthly stipend in accordance with UNIDO’s policies. However, they are responsible for covering their own accommodation, visa, travel, and living expenses.
