Eligibility Criteria
The UNIDO Internship Programme welcomes motivated and curious individuals who are pursuing or have recently completed higher education. To qualify, applicants must:
- Be currently enrolled in the final year of a bachelor’s program, or
- Be enrolled in a master’s or higher-level program, or
- Have graduated with a bachelor’s or master’s degree within the past 12 months.
Candidates must also be nationals of UNIDO Member States and demonstrate proficiency in the working language of the duty station (typically English). Additional language skills, such as French, Spanish, or Arabic, are considered an asset.
Beyond academics, UNIDO values individuals who are passionate about sustainable industrialization, global collaboration, and innovation.
Internship Locations and Duration
UNIDO internships are offered both at the Headquarters in Vienna, Austria and at field offices worldwide. This flexibility allows interns to gain global exposure and work within diverse teams tackling pressing industrial and environmental challenges.
Internships generally last three to six months, though in certain cases — such as sponsored or research-based roles — they may extend up to twelve months.
Start dates are arranged on a rolling basis, typically beginning on the first working day of each month. This structure allows applicants to plan their participation around their academic schedules.
During your internship, you’ll be directly involved in live UNIDO projects, such as sustainable energy initiatives, digital transformation, gender equality, or circular economy programs. Each intern contributes to real outcomes while gaining valuable insights into how global development agencies operate.
Financial and Logistical Information
While UNIDO internships are unpaid volunteer assignments, interns receive a monthly stipend designed to assist with basic living costs during their tenure.
Interns are responsible for arranging and covering expenses related to:
- Travel and visa processing
- Accommodation and meals
- Health and accident insurance
UNIDO provides support documents, including visa recommendation letters and onboarding guidance, to help selected interns prepare for their assignment.
It’s important to note that completing an internship with UNIDO does not guarantee future employment. However, it significantly strengthens your professional profile and can open doors to future UN and international development roles.
What UNIDO Looks For
UNIDO seeks individuals who not only have the technical skills but also embody the organization’s values of inclusivity, professionalism, and innovation. The ideal candidate should:
- Demonstrate integrity, respect for diversity, and professionalism.
- Possess a proactive attitude and a desire to learn in a multicultural environment.
- Have strong communication, analytical, and organizational skills.
- Be committed to sustainable industrialization and global cooperation.
Applicants from various academic backgrounds are encouraged to apply — including economics, engineering, environmental science, business, communication, and international relations. UNIDO values multidisciplinary perspectives that help address global challenges creatively and effectively.
