Key Responsibilities

The internship includes a wide scope of tasks that allow individuals to work across data engineering, analysis, machine learning, and documentation. Core responsibilities include:

  • Supporting the creation of reproducible data pipelines using tools such as Power Query, Python, R, and SQL.
  • Assisting with automatic validation, quality assurance, and metadata management to improve data accuracy, completeness, and reliability.
  • Contributing to dashboards and analytics products built with platforms like Power BI, including writing DAX measures and designing visuals.
  • Assisting with machine learning and natural language processing tasks such as classification, anomaly detection, forecasting, text clustering, and deduplication.
  • Supporting innovations in retrieval-augmented generation and large-language-model frameworks, including prompt strategies, indexing, evaluation, and implementation of guardrails.
  • Automating workflows through no-code or low-code tools and scripted processes such as Power Automate and Python-based automation.
  • Ensuring compliance with UNHCR’s Data Protection Policy, humanitarian data responsibility standards, secure environments, and ethical guidelines.
  • Contributing to knowledge-sharing resources such as user guides, documentation, data dictionaries, and technical notes.
  • Coordinating with regional and country offices and supporting cross-unit tasks as required.

Eligibility Requirements

The internship is open to:

  • Current undergraduate or graduate students, or
  • Individuals who completed their degree within the past two years.

Applicants must have completed at least two years of undergraduate studies in a field related to information management, data science, statistics, computer science, economics, social sciences, or another relevant discipline.

Skills that strengthen your application include:

  • Knowledge of Python or R
  • Experience with SQL
