The goal: foster energy access, support green industrialization, and enhance resilience against economic and climate shocks across the continent.

As an intern, you will contribute to the office’s research and economic-analysis functions, supporting both data collection and interpretation efforts — tasks that feed directly into shaping policy, informing stakeholders, and guiding investment toward renewable energy projects.

Key Responsibilities

The role offers a mix of data-management, research, analysis and knowledge-dissemination tasks, including:

  • Economic research and data analysis: Gathering and analysing data from a variety of sources — for instance from government reports, international databases, academic literature — to identify trends, build benchmarks or indices, and draw insights on renewable-energy markets in Africa.
  • Data management & visualization: Organising, verifying, and maintaining databases; producing charts, graphs, dashboards, and analytical notes that help communicate complex data in an accessible way for policymaking and reporting.
  • Knowledge management & reporting support: Drafting briefing notes, reports, presentations; updating country-level project profiles; helping with documentation and knowledge repositories to support decision-making by UNOPS and its partners.
  • Event support and stakeholder engagement: Assisting in preparation for workshops, stakeholder meetings, and other events linked to the renewable-energy initiatives handled by the office.

What You Gain — The Learning Opportunity

This internship is more than just a resume-builder. It offers real-world exposure to international development work, especially in the renewable energy sector and across Africa. As an intern you will likely:

  • Learn practical data analysis techniques — cleaning, structuring, interpreting data from diverse sources.
  • Develop skills in data visualization and presentation — critical for policy-oriented work where data needs to be communicated to non-technical stakeholders.
  • Build experience in economic research, report writing, and knowledge-management practices.
  • Engage with cross-country and multi-stakeholder contexts: the regional office of UNOPS covers many African countries.
  • Contribute, in a tangible way, to programmes that impact energy access, green growth, and resilience — meaningful work with real impact.

Who Is Eligible & What Qualifications Are Sought?

UNOPS welcomes applicants who:

  • Hold a university degree (bachelor’s or higher), or recently completed within the last 3 years.
  • Preferably have studied Economics, Statistics, Data Science, Public Policy or related quantitative/social-science fields.
  • Are proficient in English (written and spoken).
  • Possess — ideally — skills in data analysis (Excel, R, Python, SQL) and some familiarity with databases or quantitative research methods. This is described as highly desirable, though not strictly mandatory.
