About the Traineeship

This traineeship is based at UNITAR Headquarters in Geneva, Switzerland, and runs for four to six months. It is offered under vacancy code TR/2025/016. Although the position is technically unpaid, the selected candidate receives a monthly lump-sum stipend of 900 CHF intended to support transportation and miscellaneous expenses throughout the traineeship.

The role is positioned within UNITAR’s Core Diplomacy Training (CDT) stream, which delivers intensive workshops and orientation courses to more than 2,500 diplomats annually across various UN duty stations. In addition, the Multilateral Diplomacy Programme Unit designs regional training programmes, e-Learning courses, and specialized advisory services for diplomatic academies. The Unit is also known for producing publications, online tools, and learning resources focused on multilateralism and international cooperation.

A major focus of this traineeship is supporting the administration and enhancement of UNITAR’s Online Master in International Affairs and Diplomacy, developed in partnership with globally recognized academic institutions. Key Responsibilities

The selected trainee will work directly under a Programme Officer and contribute to several key areas, including:

  • Supporting the coordination and implementation of the Online Master Programme and related qualifications.
  • Reviewing and adapting training materials to uphold academic quality and instructional design standards.
  • Assisting with admissions processes, communication efforts, and outreach activities, including interactions with partner institutions and interested participants.
  • Conducting research on emerging topics in diplomacy and exploring potential academic collaborations for future programmes.

Through these responsibilities, the trainee will gain deeper insight into how high-level diplomatic training is conceptualized, delivered, and evaluated. They will also interact with UNITAR staff, UN personnel, and international experts — offering invaluable exposure within the multilateral system.

Eligibility and Requirements

Applicants must be enrolled in or recently graduated from an undergraduate, graduate, or postgraduate programme in fields such as international relations, political science, law, history, languages, or related disciplines. They must begin the traineeship within two years of graduation.
