Supporting Newcomer Youth in Their Learning Journey

For many refugee and immigrant children arriving in the United States, education has often been disrupted by conflict, displacement, or long periods of instability. This role is created to help bridge those gaps by providing targeted language development, academic support, and social-emotional learning. The IRC’s Youth and Education team envisions a future where newcomer youth have the skills, confidence, and support they need to thrive in their new communities.

The Multilingual Program Specialist focuses primarily on elementary-aged children, offering them consistent, trauma-informed, and culturally responsive learning support. These children often require help not only with English language acquisition but also with adjusting to routines, expectations, and new forms of learning.

Key Responsibilities of the Role

The specialist supports both in-school and after-school programs that serve refugee and immigrant learners. Some of the core responsibilities include:

• Supporting planning and delivery of structured learning programs such as literacy support, social-emotional learning sessions, and reading-focused activities.
• Leading small-group and one-on-one lessons that build English language proficiency, basic literacy, math skills, and overall academic confidence.
• Providing individualized instruction for students who require extra support due to interrupted schooling or limited English proficiency.
• Engaging families during outreach and enrollment to ensure they understand program offerings and feel supported during their transition.
• Helping families navigate the U.S. school system by offering guidance, translation assistance, and resource connections.
• Creating learning environments that are inclusive, safe, and responsive to the emotional and cultural needs of newcomer youth.

Desired Skills and Experience
