Who Can Apply?
UNHCR internships are open to candidates who meet a few specific eligibility criteria. Applicants must be currently enrolled students, either undergraduate or graduate, or recent graduates within two years of completing their studies. They should have completed at least two years of undergraduate education in a field relevant to UNHCR’s mission.

Where and When Internships Take Place
UNHCR offers internships at its headquarters in Geneva, its Global Service Centres located in places like Amman, Budapest, or Copenhagen, and in field country offices around the world. In certain cases, and subject to manager approval, interns may also be allowed to telework remotely.
Internships can start almost any time of the year, offering flexibility for both the intern and the organization. Full-time internships typically last two to six months, with a maximum cumulative duration of eight months, while part-time internships can extend up to 12 months cumulatively across any previous internships at UNHCR.
What Do Interns Do?
Interns at UNHCR can work in a wide variety of roles depending on the office’s needs and their academic background. Opportunities exist in areas such as protection, programming, communications, media, advocacy, administrative support, refugee-support projects, and logistics.
Some interns may contribute to community-based protection initiatives, assist in procurement of essential relief items, or support program implementation and budgeting. This diversity allows students from disciplines like social sciences, law, international relations, public policy, communications, and administration to find a role aligned with their interests.
Benefits of an Internship
UNHCR provides a limited allowance for interns who do not receive external financial support. This allowance is intended to cover basic living costs such as food, transportation, and other day-to-day expenses. Full-time interns receive 50–70% of the monthly net salary of a General Service level 3 step 1 at the duty station, while part-time interns receive 50% of this rate.
In some cases, UNHCR may reimburse return travel costs for interns traveling from outside the country of the duty station. Interns are, however, responsible for arranging valid medical insurance for the duration of their internship.
It is important to note that completing an internship does not guarantee future employment with UNHCR.
