What the Fellowship Is About

Who Can Apply?
The program welcomes applicants from any country, making it truly international. Scholars must be at the post-doctoral level and should have a track record of published work beyond their PhD dissertation. Practitioners or policymakers with an equivalent professional profile may also apply, even without academic affiliation.
However, some categories of applicants are not eligible. The fellowship does not support dissertation research, rewritten dissertations, textbook or anthology projects, translations, memoirs, or work in the arts and natural sciences. The focus remains firmly on the humanities and social sciences with clear policy relevance. Applicants must also be prepared to reside full-time in Washington, D.C., for the duration of their fellowship.
What the Fellowship Provides
Selected fellows receive a monthly stipend of US$10,000 for a full year, providing financial stability while they commit fully to their research. Fellows are given private, fully furnished offices, access to the Wilson Center Library, and borrowing privileges at the U.S. Library of Congress. The fellowship’s location in Washington, D.C., places scholars at the heart of policy discussions, offering unique networking and engagement opportunities.
In exchange, fellows are expected to dedicate their time exclusively to their proposed projects. They must present a “Work-in-Progress” seminar, attend presentations by other fellows, and participate actively in the intellectual life of the Center. While teaching or holding other fellowships during the tenure is not allowed, fellows are encouraged to publish, brief policymakers, and contribute to public dialogue based on their findings.
Application Requirements
A completed application includes a detailed project proposal (up to five pages), explaining the research question, methodology, significance, and relevance to contemporary policy issues. Applicants must also provide a three-page CV, a list of publications, a bibliography, and two letters of recommendation written in English. Proposals must follow strict formatting and page limits, as materials beyond the limits may not be reviewed.
