UNICEF is inviting applications for the position of Senior Consultant on Disaster Risk Reduction (DRR) and Climate Change Adaptation (CCA) Innovation within its Office of Innovation. This is a 12-month remote consultancy designed for experienced professionals who are passionate about climate resilience, innovation, and protecting children and communities from climate-related risks.

As climate shocks, disasters, and environmental stresses continue to intensify, UNICEF is scaling up innovative approaches to help countries anticipate, prepare for, and adapt to climate risks. This consultancy plays a critical role in shaping how innovative DRR and CCA solutions are identified, strengthened, and scaled across UNICEF programmes globally.

Role Overview

The Senior Consultant will work closely with UNICEF’s Climate Resilience Centre of Excellence and the Office of Innovation to advance innovative approaches that strengthen disaster preparedness and climate adaptation. The focus of this role is on systems-level innovation, including early warning systems, anticipatory action, climate-risk analytics, and climate-resilient infrastructure and services.

The consultant will support UNICEF’s strategic priorities under its upcoming Strategic Plan and Sustainability and Climate Action framework, ensuring innovation is embedded into climate resilience programming at global, regional, and country levels.

Key Responsibilities

The consultant will be responsible for identifying and scaling impactful DRR and CCA innovations within UNICEF and the wider development ecosystem. Core responsibilities include conducting a global stock-taking of existing innovations, mapping technical expertise across UNICEF offices, and identifying opportunities to strengthen collaboration and knowledge sharing.

The role also involves developing global guidance, tools, briefs, and case studies that support the adoption and scaling of innovative solutions. The consultant will provide targeted technical assistance to up to 15 priority countries, helping integrate innovations into national systems, policies, and programmes.

Additional duties include supporting capacity-building initiatives for UNICEF staff and partners, contributing to training materials, and assisting with the development of project concepts and funding proposals that promote climate-resilient solutions for children and communities.

Required Qualifications and Experience

Applicants should hold a Master’s degree or higher in disaster risk reduction, climate change adaptation, environmental science, international development, public policy, or a related field. A minimum of 10 years of professional experience in DRR and/or CCA is required, with strong exposure to innovative approaches and systems strengthening.

Candidates should demonstrate expertise in areas such as early warning systems, anticipatory action, climate-risk analysis, resilient infrastructure, or community-based resilience. Experience developing technical guidance, tools, and training materials, as well as providing advisory support to governments, UN agencies, or development partners, is essential.

Fluency in English is required, while knowledge of additional UN languages is considered an asset.
