The Wilson Center Research Fellowship is one of the flagship programs at the Woodrow Wilson International Center for Scholars—an institution dedicated to bridging the worlds of academic research and public policy. Unlike traditional residential programs, fellows work remotely during their fellowship. However, the Wilson Center covers travel for two mandatory trips to Washington, D.C.—one at the start and another at the end of the fellowship. Throughout the year, fellows are expected to remain highly engaged with the intellectual and policy communities in Washington.

Expectations During the Fellowship

Fellows are expected to deliver on several fronts:

  • Complete the proposed research project as outlined in the application.
  • Present a Work-in-Progress talk internally to fellow researchers for feedback and discussion.
  • Engage with policymakers, which may include briefings for federal agencies, informal roundtable discussions with Congressional staff, or public-facing events like workshops and seminars.
  • Produce policy-related outputs such as op-eds, policy briefs, or reports to translate academic research into actionable insights.

In addition, fellows receive valuable research support through privileges with the Library of Congress and access to digital resources and academic networks.
