Role Overview
As Principal Research Scientist, TB Modeling, the successful candidate will provide strategic and scientific leadership for tuberculosis modeling initiatives. The role focuses on designing, developing, and applying dynamic disease transmission models that evaluate the potential impact of TB vaccines, diagnostics, treatments, and prevention strategies.
This is a senior-level role that bridges science and strategy. The position not only involves deep technical modeling work but also requires translating complex results into clear, actionable insights for program leaders, policymakers, and external stakeholders. The role directly supports decision-making that shapes global TB research investments and implementation pathways.
Key Responsibilities
Key responsibilities of the role include:
- Leading advanced TB modeling projects to inform global health strategies, product pipelines, and policy decisions.
- Developing and refining dynamic transmission and impact models that account for epidemiological, biological, and social factors influencing TB spread and control.
- Translating modeling outputs into practical insights for both technical and non-technical audiences, including senior leadership.
- Serving as a thought leader in TB modeling, contributing to scientific strategy and innovation across the Foundation.
- Collaborating closely with internal teams, academic researchers, global health partners, and external experts to align modeling with real-world needs.
- Critically evaluating existing modeling approaches and advancing next-generation methods to address key gaps in TB research.
- Supporting cross-disease modeling initiatives and mentoring other scientists within the Institute for Disease Modeling.
Qualifications and Experience
This role requires deep expertise and a strong scientific reputation in infectious disease modeling. Ideal candidates will have:
- A PhD in epidemiology, biostatistics, applied mathematics, computational biology, or a related quantitative discipline.
- 15 or more years of experience in infectious disease modeling, with significant expertise in tuberculosis.
- A strong publication record and recognition as a subject-matter expert in TB epidemiology or modeling.
- Advanced programming skills, particularly in Python and R, and experience building complex dynamic models.
- Demonstrated ability to communicate complex scientific concepts clearly and persuasively to diverse audiences.
- Experience working in multidisciplinary and collaborative environments, with the ability to influence strategy at a senior level.
