What Is the UNHCR Internship Programme?
UNHCR’s internship programme is more than just an entry-level opportunity: it’s a chance to contribute to the agency’s mission of safeguarding refugees, internally displaced people, and stateless persons around the world. Interns are welcomed from all nationalities and bring fresh perspectives, academic knowledge, and enthusiasm to teams working on pressing global challenges. Unlike many internships that are purely observational, UNHCR internships involve substantive responsibilities, meaning interns take on real tasks that support core operational goals.

Who Can Apply? Eligibility Criteria
To be considered for a UNHCR internship, candidates must meet several eligibility criteria:
- Be a current student (undergraduate or graduate) or a recent graduate, usually within two years of completing studies
- Have completed at least two years of undergraduate study relevant to UNHCR’s work
- Be proficient in English at minimum B2 level; additional language skills are an advantage
- Not have close family members employed at UNHCR
- Not have already completed the maximum allowable internship period, which is 8 months for full-time or 12 months for part-time internships
This ensures that students and newly graduated professionals from diverse academic backgrounds—law, international relations, communications, environmental studies, and more—can find roles that match their skills and interests.
Where Do Internships Take Place?
UNHCR internships are offered in several environments:
- Headquarters in Geneva, Switzerland
- Global Service Centres in Amman, Budapest, and Copenhagen
- Field Country Offices across Africa, Asia, the Middle East, the Americas, and beyond
Some internships may also allow telework, offering flexibility for those unable to relocate. The availability of internships depends on the office’s capacity to supervise and meaningfully engage interns.
Duration and Structure
Internships typically run between two to six months, with both full-time and part-time options depending on the intern’s availability and academic commitments. Extensions may be possible up to the maximum limits mentioned above, provided eligibility is maintained.
