Internship Overview
This internship is based at HRW’s Berlin office and is part of the Europe & Central Asia Division, which addresses human rights issues across countries in Eastern Europe, the Balkans, the South Caucasus, Central Asia, Turkey, and Western Europe. The internship is full-time, typically running for six months, and allows interns to gain first-hand experience in international human rights research and advocacy.
Key Responsibilities
Interns at HRW will take on meaningful tasks that support the division’s research and advocacy efforts. Typical responsibilities include:
- Conducting background research on political, legal, and human rights developments.
- Drafting research notes, advocacy memos, and briefings for internal teams.
- Monitoring developments involving governments, NGOs, and regional institutions.
- Supporting outreach efforts to policymakers, journalists, and civil society actors.
- Participating in team discussions and strategy meetings to contribute to project planning.
This hands-on experience offers a deep understanding of how an international human rights organization operates, combining research, analysis, and engagement with real-world stakeholders.
Who Should Apply
Applicants should:
- Be currently enrolled students in a university program or equivalent academic course.
- Be eligible for a mandatory or optional internship through their academic program.
- Have a strong interest in European and Central Asian politics, human rights, international law, or related fields.
