Program Overview

The Netherlands is one of the most sought-after destinations by immigrants seeking better socio-economic opportunities.The economy of the Netherlands is the 15th largest in the world in 2022 according to Forbes.Located in northwestern Europe, the Netherlands is one of the richest European Union (EU) member states with a wide range of socio-economic work opportunities for people from across the world.

However, two points need to be clarified as far as the Netherlands visa is concerned.

1. Citizens of Switzerland, the European Union (EU) and European Economic Area (EEA) citizens do not need any Netherlands visa or residence permit application processes at all. Their travel ID is sufficient to allow them to live and work in the Netherlands.

2. Citizens of the US, Australia, South Korea, and a few other countries also do not need to apply for a Netherlands visa to immigrate. However, they MUST obtain a residence permit, which they can get once they are in the country.

In this article, we there look closely at requirements for visas to the Netherlands if you are not from the EU/EEA or other nations specified above.

As with visa requirements for other countries, your situation is what determines the requirements and cost (money and time) of your visa application.

Work visa and work permits in Netherlands

The law in Netherlands is that unless you are a formal investor or entrepreneur, you do not need to apply for a work permit or employment visa yourself. The application process is the responsibility of the employer that acts as your host in the country.

So if you have found a job in the Netherlands or are looking for one, the burden of acquiring a work visa lies on your employer.

The only exception is if you are applying for a highly skilled migrant visa. In this case, you do not need an additional work permit.

Documents and Language when Applying

All of visa applications in the Netherlands are processed by the Immigration and Naturalization Service (IND).  The actual documents needed depend on your country of origin and the type of visa you’re applying for.

Notice that your documents need to be presented in English, Dutch, German, or French, and must be legalized. Because the process can become complex and confusing, the best practice is to rely on the help of  professionals or immigration experts with Dutch expertise.In most cases you will need both a work and resident permit. You can submit a joint application for both, also called the Single Permit.

But as we indicated above, unless you are self-employed, it will be your employer who takes care of your residence permit.

By the time your application has been successfully processed and you’re moving to the Netherlands, you must have obtained three documents:

1. Work permit.

2. Residence permit

3. Long-stay visa

Netherlands work visa cost

The total costs for a Netherlands work visa ordinarily do not exceed 300 EUR or 330 USD.

Apart from the money, another obvious requirement for the Netherlands work visa is that you must:

– have a valid passport or such other travel document;

– have a clear criminal record and the information you provide in the application must be truthful;

– commit to undergo a medical test for tuberculosis once you arrive.

Also, you must be earning sufficient income for the specific visa type and your employer must recognized officially by the Netherlands government.

Other issues to consider

On the issue of visa fees, note that if you are an entrepreneur and apply for a self-employment visa, you will need to pay over 1,300 EUR or 1,500 USD for your application.

Note also that you must make an appointment at the local City Office within five days of your arrival to the Netherlands. At that office, you will receive your Dutch citizens service number.
