Introduction

In the field of social protection, the ILO Office for the Andean Countries promotes knowledge of international labor standards associated with this topic and technical collaboration for the effective extension of social security to all. Under this premise, the Office’s actions are aimed at strengthening the individual capacities of its constituents in the field of the two-dimensional strategy for the extension of social security coverage and accompanying concrete actions for the consolidation of comprehensive social protection systems, on the base of national social protection floors.

The intern will be assigned to the ILO Office for the Andean Countries based in Lima (Peru). The main function of the intern will be to support the Social Security Specialist in the coordination and provision of technical assistance services within the framework of the project with the Derrama Magisterial and, additionally, to collaborate in interventions at the subregional and country level for the effective implementation of social protection floors in line with Convention No. 102 of the ILO on minimum social security standards and Recommendation no. 202 on national social protection floors.

Duties and Responsibilities

Under the direct supervision of the Social Security Specialist of the ILO Office for the Andean countries, the intern will carry out the following support functions in:

  1. The systematization and analysis of relevant information to evaluate the performance of social protection systems in LAC and the Andean countries in particular.
  2. Carrying out analytical studies aimed at policy formulation and technical assistance to ILO constituents.
  3. The writing of technical reports related to the activities of the Social Security Specialist in the fields of social protection and employment and formalization policies.
  4. Collaborate with the updating of the Social Security Inquiry managed by the Department of Social Protection of the ILO (Geneva).

5. Process different surveys from Peru and the rest of the Andean countries on issues related to the labor market and social protection.

6. Systematize information by thematic axes.

7. Prepare power point presentations

Learning

At the end of the assignment the intern will have acquired knowledge and experience in: 

  1. ILO legal framework on social protection.
  2. Two-dimensional strategy to expand social protection coverage, based on its horizontal and vertical dimension.
  3. Design and formulation of social protection policies aimed at promoting the expansion of contributory coverage, the adequacy of benefits and the economic and financial sustainability of the systems.
  4. Analysis of data, statistics and regulatory frameworks related to social protection policies.
  5. Articulation with other UN agencies and other relevant social protection organizations for the promotion of a social protection floor throughout the life cycle.

Requirements

  • University degree in economics, sociology, or social sciences.
  • Study or have completed a postgraduate degree in the last year in programs related to social protection, employment or social policies.
  • Excellent command of Spanish and intermediate level of English

Expected results

  1. Knowledge to evaluate the performance of a social protection system based on the NITs.
  2. Ability to systematize and compare relevant social protection statistics, in accordance with the provisions of the Convention on Minimum Standards of Social Security and the Recommendation on National Social Protection Floors.
  3. Ability to formulate social protection policies aimed at expanding coverage, improving the adequacy of benefits and guaranteeing the sustainability of the systems.

Stipend:

As an intern in a field office, you will receive a monthly stipend from the ILO that corresponds to the cost of living at the duty station, unless you receive funding through another institution (for example, your university or a foundation). If you receive partial funding, the ILO will cover the difference to ensure you receive the appropriate stipend each month.
