Visa requirements

Different countries have different visa requirements and that should be a deciding factor when you choose which country to go to for your university education.

A good approach is to narrow down your university choices to say five universities, then check with the country’s consular offices in your country to find out the visa requirements. That should leave you better informed as to the cost of visa, the time it takes to acquire the visa, and any other requirements.

Tuition fees

Of course, unless you have deep pockets or ate under full scholarship, a key determinant of your university choice is the tuition fees to be paid.

Universities generally provide their tuition fees on their websites, so it’s a pretty easy task to decide which university suits your financial capacity.

Pay special attention to other supplementary costs related to your tuition such as medical insurance, student representation fees and other costs as these may be significant as to influence your choice.

Cost of living

University education on foreign soils can be expensive due to cost of living. Some universities in Europe are cheap or even free, but are located in a city that’s expensive to live in. The opposite also obtains.

Therefore, a detailed check of cost of living including apartment rentals in the cities of the preferred universities is worth your while. Be sure to also check and comfirm the costs of transport to and from campus, library membership fees, internet arrangements and insurance fees.

You’ll probably need to find legitimate online cost of living calculators and comparators to get a clearer comparison.

Social environment

Universities exists in societies where certain cultural, religious and other societal values may persist. It could be that some community is not so tolerant to foreign cultural practices and if you are to live in there, you would feel unwelcome.

Some communities are more welcoming and tolerant than others. However, although this is less of a problem in Europe, it to a certain extent is an issue in more conservative societies.

When you find a university of your liking, take time to go through the university prospectus to understand the culture on and off campus. Read online newspaper articles from the community and get a picture of what it is like to stay and live in the community as a foreign student.

Language

Closely linked to the issue of social environment is language used on campus to deliver the lectures. A good number of European universities are now increasingly ensuring that lecturers are delivered in English.

Still, many universities particularly in Greece, Turkey, Cyprus, Norway and Switzerland still deliver lectures in non-English languages. If you choose such a university, it means you will probably have to spend more time at the University, spending more money, as the first part of your stay at the University will be on language courses.

Career prospects

You’d most probably find it easier to get a job in the same country or city where you obtained your degree. Therefore, when choosing a university, pay attention to the fact that a few years later, you’ll probably want full job or internships in the same city.

Is the country or city where your preferred university is located able to provide post graduation opportunities for you?
