Human Rights Watch (HRW) is seeking an intern for the Advocacy Division focusing on advocacy and communications for the Stockholm office. The internship is full-time, 35 hours per week, and will run for 20 weeks, starting during the first week of September 2024 through January 2025. The internship is unpaid, and interns must be enrolled university students for the duration of the internship.
This internship suits those who are interested in gaining experience from a global human rights organization, within a national country office. The intern will gain experience and skills from a broad range of human rights activities, including advocacy and communication. HRW interns have unique opportunities to attend lectures, trainings, professional development workshops, special events relating to human rights, and network with other HRW interns, volunteers, and employees. As an HRW intern, you will be able to use the skills and knowledge you have acquired during your studies and apply these in a professional environment. HRW’s Stockholm office is part of Norrsken House, located in central Stockholm.
Some of the main tasks include (but are not limited to):
- Assisting in HRW’s advocacy work for human rights in the Nordics;
- Supporting the advocacy team through monitoring of global developments, develop comment letters, responses and other relevant material when necessary;
- Assisting in the development of HRW’s network for creators (Creators Society);
- Support in spreading HRW’s research and recommendations by creating targeted communications to decisionmakers and the general public; and
- Participating in briefings with the media and other target groups for HRW’s advocacy work.
Qualifications:
Interns in Sweden must be an enrolled student for the duration of their internship term. Coursework in a relevant area, such as human rights, media, communications, law, political science, or global studies is preferred. Applicants should be well-organized, creative, flexible, and detail- oriented with excellent time management skills. Experience with collaborating within a team is desirable. Internet research skills and familiarity with MS Office programs, such as Word and Excel, are essential. The ideal candidate will have excellent written and oral communication skills in Swedish and English and a demonstrated interest in communication, fundraising, global affairs, and human rights.
