GOOGLE CONFERENCE & TRAVEL SCHOLARSHIPS

At Google, we believe a diversity of attributes, experiences, and perspectives are needed to build tools that can change the world. Everyone deserves an opportunity to pursue connections in the industry, networking with peers, and a career path in technology. To help break down the barriers that prevent underrepresented groups in technology and business from attending leading conferences, we’re excited to offer Google Conference and Travel Scholarships for selected conferences in the tech industry and related fields.

To encourage attendance at technical conferences, Google will provide selected recipients:

• Free conference registration
• North America: Cost of one registration for the virtual conference listed on the North America tab.
• Europe : Up to 1,000 EUR towards travel and accommodation costs (will be paid after the conference)
• India : An award in the range of 1,000 – 3,000 USD that will cover conference registration, travel, accommodation and other related expenses.
• Africa : An award in the range of 1,000 – 3,000 USD that will cover conference registration, travel, accommodation and related expenses. Scholarship amount depends on cost for the international conference.
• Japan & South Korea : Up to 3,000 USD towards air tickets and lodging cost (will be paid after the conference). Scholarship amount depends on cost for the international conference.

Scholarship eligibility varies by region, so please review the information on the region-specific tabs on the top. Scholarships will be awarded to the most qualified persons based on application review. Every applicant will be notified of their status according to the time frames specified for the region.

Eligibility: North America

Scholarships are available in North America for all traditionally underrepresented groups in technology and business (including, but not limited to: African American/Black, Hispanic/Latinx, Native American, persons with disabilities, women and veterans).

In order to apply for the North America Google Conference Scholarship, you must fulfill the following eligibility requirements:

• Have a strong academic and/or professional background with demonstrated leadership ability
• Be able to attend the core day(s) of one of the conferences
• Persons who are (1) residents of North America and US Territories, (2) studying or working in North America, or (3) will be in North America at the time of the conference
• Applicants must be 18 years of age or older

Conferences

• Society of Women Engineers virtual Conference 2020 (Deadline: Oct. 15)
• AfroTech World virtual conference (Deadline: Oct. 11)
• Neural Information Processing Systems (NeurIPS) (Deadline: Nov. 16)
• Lesbians who Tech Debug 2020 Summit (Deadline: Oct. 21)
• Society of Hispanic Professional Engineers This year Google will be donating to SHPE’s ALL-IN Relief Fund. If you would like to be considered for a conference registration scholarship, please apply directly.

Claim process

Recipients will be notified by email prior to the date of the conference. If you are selected, we will contact you with conference registration details and information about how you will receive your post-conference reimbursement.

Eligibility: Europe

Scholarships are available in Europe for women in technology. In order to apply for the Europe Google Conference & Travel Scholarship, you must fulfill the following eligibility requirements:

• Have a strong academic and/or professional background with demonstrated leadership ability
• Be able to attend the core day(s) of one of the conferences
• Persons who are residents of Europe, Middle East or Africa
• Applicants must be 18 years of age or older

Conferences

Conferences to be announced approximately three months prior to the conference date.

We are currently not accepting any applications, be sure to check back in late 2020.

Claim process

All applicants will be notified of the outcome of their application by email, approximately four weeks prior to the conference. If you are selected, you will receive additional information on how to register for the conference and how to receive your scholarship.

Eligibility: Africa

To be eligible for a scholarship to attend an international conference, applicants must:

• Be a student enrolled with a recognized university in Africa who is in need of conference travel funds.
• Studying computer science, computer engineering, or a technical field related to the conference subject.
• Have a paper accepted for presentation (oral or poster) in the main conference program at a top-tier Computer Science conference. We prefer to support conferences in research areas where Google has a strong interest. Please visit research.google.com for a list of areas. The paper must be accepted for full publication and preferably full oral presentation. Workshop papers will not be approved for travel scholarships.
• Be the sole or joint first author of the accepted paper.

Claim process

We review applications monthly, all year round, therefore you will get our reply four to six weeksfrom the date of the application. Once approved for a travel scholarship, the funds will be paid to the applicant’s university and the student may claim expenses using regular university procedures.

Eligibility: India

To be eligible for a scholarship to attend a conference in India, applicants must:

• Be a student enrolled with a recognized university in India who is in need of conference travel funds.
• Have a paper accepted at a top-tier top-tier computer science conference. We prefer to support conferences in research areas where Google has a strong interest. Please visit ai.google for a list of areas. The paper must be accepted for full publication and preferably full oral presentation. As an indicator, we have recently approved travel scholarships for CVPR, NeurIPS, ICML, CHI, AAAI, STOC, PLDI, COLT, KDD, ICCV, EMNLP, WWW, ACL, Interspeech and FSE.
• Be the primary author of the accepted paper.
• Have a paper accepted for oral presentation in the main conference program. Some conferences may have different presentation guidelines in which case the equivalent of a conventional full oral presentation must be considered. Workshop papers will not be approved for travel scholarships.

We review applications on a rolling basis, all year round, therefore you will get our reply within three weeks of applying. Please note that given the high volume of applications, we will not be sending decision emails to applicants who do not meet our review criteria. For example: If you have a workshop paper at a CS conference or a full paper at a non-CS conference, we will not be in a position to reply.

Once approved for a travel scholarship, the funds will be paid to the applicant’s university and the student may claim expenses using regular university procedures.

Eligibility: Japan & South Korea

To be eligible for a scholarship to attend an international research conference, applicants must

• Be a full-time student enrolled with a recognized university in Japan or South Korea who is in need of conference travel funds.
• Have a paper accepted at a top-tier computer science conference. We prefer to support conferences in research areas where Google has a strong interest. Please visit research.google.com for a list of areas. Please refer to popular conference rankings to determine the conference tier.
• Be the primary author of the accepted paper.
• Have a paper accepted for oral presentation in the main conference program. Some conferences may have different presentation guidelines in which case the equivalent of a conventional full oral presentation must be considered. Workshop papers will not be approved for travel scholarships.
