Program Overview

The United Nations Development Programme (UNDP) is committed to achieving workforce diversity in terms of gender, nationality and culture.

A total of sixty (60) jobs have been added and are now available at UNDP various sites across the world. The promotion of gender equality and the empowerment of women is central to the mandate of UNDP and intrinsic to its development approach.

This effort includes advocating for women’s and girls’ equal rights, combating discriminatory practices and challenging the roles and stereotypes that affect inequalities and exclusion.

Background to Gender Equality

In July 2010, the United Nations General Assembly created UN Women, the United Nations Entity for Gender Equality and the Empowerment of Women.

The creation of UN Women came about as part of the UN reform agenda, bringing together resources and mandates for greater impact.

It merges and builds on the important work of four previously distinct parts of the UN system (DAW, OSAGI, INSTRAW and UNIFEM), which focused exclusively on gender equality and women’s empowerment.

Competencies required

You will require certain skills sets to thrive and accomplish results at the UNDP. In general, UNDP requires that candidates possess the following competencies as a minimum for them to succeed in a Gender and Equality role:

  • Good knowledge of gender equality and women’s empowerment, including women’s political participation
  • Good organizational skills and ability to pay close attention to detail.
  • Good communication skills.
  • Demonstrated leadership and personal examples of promoting knowledge management and a professional learning environment.
  • Outstanding networking, team building, organizational and communication skills.
  • Capacity to work with diverse partners including governments, donors, and civil society.
  • Ability to use Microsoft word, excel, e-mail, web-based applications, and databases.
  • Ability to work effectively and harmoniously with people from varied cultures and professional backgrounds.
  • Results based management skills.
  • In-depth knowledge of development issues.
  • Ability to advocate and provide policy advice.
  • Ability in strategic planning, results-based management, and reporting.
