CV writing tips for jobs in 2023 and beyond

Don’t put your full address because of safety concerns, you can put City and Province which should be enough. Also full address might not be ideal if you are applying for roles which may seem too far to where you are currently staying.
Unless you have a unique objective statement, don’t include one on your CV. Objective statements works well when applying for internships or if you are doing a career pivot. Replace objective statement with a professional summary which highlights skills+experience+achievements.

Don’t put your job responsibilities, focus on what you have accomplished, and things you can quantify. If you worked in retail, don’t put “assisted customers,” instead say something like “assisted 60+ customers per day, praised by management for excellent service.”
Please, save your CV as your first and last name, not CV. When its saved on your computer, its the only CV. When it is saved on mine, it is Resume (47) and I will never be able to find it.

Most importantly, you should tailor your resume to the job you are applying to, and change key words to match those you see in the job description to assist AI in searching. Jobs get over a thousand applications most of of the time, and AI is used to pare down.

Don’t waste your time on a cover letter unless you have the name and email of the hiring manager/recruiter, and can send it to them directly. Cover letters should be unique to each position, so don’t waste your time unless you are CERTAIN someone will read it.

How to properly send job application via email

Except for very few cases, job applications nowadays are submitted by email or via an online job portal set up by the hiring firm or an agency. Here are out guidelines to submitting a job application via email.

The greeting / salutation should include the name of the recipient. Some applications will include the name of the Hiring Manager, so address it to that person. Check the email address as well to see the person’s name/surname. This is important because addressing someone by their name immediately allows you to create a connection with them. Do a quick search on LinkedIn if you have to. If all else fails, then address as “Dear Hiring Manager”.

Subject: Some job posts will have specific instructions on what to include in the subject line, so pay attention to that. If no details are given, then write the name of the position you’re applying for + your name. Eg. Application for Senior Project Manager | Kenny Kunene.

Body: Mention the role you’re applying for and relevant skills/experience. “I recently came across the Senior Project Manager job opening on your website, and I was immediately intrigued with the opportunity to leverage my 6 years of experience in leading the successful execution of large-scale construction projects that accelerate revenue growth”.

Closing: the closing remarks are as key as any part of the email. Try something like: “I’ve attached my CV and cover letter for your review / consideration. Please don’t hesitate to reach out if you would like additional information.

“I look forward to hearing from you soon.”
