REQUIRED QUALIFICATIONS

EDUCATION

  • Advanced university degree (Masters or equivalent) in the relevant field of social and human sciences, political science, international relations, or a related discipline.

WORK EXPERIENCE 

  • Minimum 2 (two) years of relevant professional experience in the field of social and human sciences, political science, international relations at the national or sub-regional level.
  • Experience working in the implementation of national and/or sub-regional projects in the area of social and human sciences.
  • Experience in fundraising and financial resource mobilisation and establishing and maintaining relations with donors.
  • Experience using web-based information management systems.

SKILLS AND COMPETENCIES

  • Proven organizational and coordination skills, ability to take initiative, establish priorities, monitor own work plans and report on actions and projects.
  • Strong project management skills.
  • Good interpersonal and communication skills; ability to deal efficiently with partners at different levels.
  • Ability to participate effectively in negotiations.
  • Ability to work effectively in a multicultural team environment.
  • Capacity to adapt and adjust work schedules and perform diligently under pressure.
  • Excellent knowledge management with an understanding of emerging communication and information technologies and their potential uses.

LANGUAGE

  • Excellent knowledge of English.

  • Experience in UNESCO’s Programmes and/or normative tools in the field of Social and Human Sciences.
  • Experience with the United Nations System, multilateral settings/cooperation and development.
  • Experience with inter-agency mechanisms of the United Nations System.
  • Experience working with an Enterprise Resource Planning system (ERP).

SKILLS AND COMPETENCIES

  • Good knowledge of UNESCO’s work, and familiarity with Social and Human Sciences Sector activities.
  • Knowledge of the geopolitical context of the South Asia region.

LANGUAGE

  • Excellent knowledge of English.

Objectives and Programs

UNESCO’s programs contribute to the achievement of the Sustainable Development Goals defined in the 2030 Agenda, adopted by the UN General Assembly in 2015

Funding and Membership

UNESCO gets its funding from contributions by member states, voluntary contributions, fundraising, and other smaller sources of funding

3. It has 195 Members and 8 Associate Members and is governed by the General Conference and the Executive Board

4. The United States used to contribute about 22% of UNESCO’s budget, but it withdrew its funding after Palestine applied for UNESCO membership

5. Israel also reacted to Palestine’s admittance to UNESCO by freezing Israeli payments to UNESCO and imposing sanctions on the Palestinian Authority

World Heritage Sites

One of UNESCO’s most famous initiatives is its World Heritage Center, which identifies cultural, natural, and mixed sites to be protected all over the world

6. The World Heritage sites include iconic landmarks such as the Pyramids of Giza, Australia’s Great Barrier Reef, and Peru’s Machu Picchu
