8 Germany Fully Funded PhD Programs At Forschungszentrum Jülich 2023

1. Fully Funded PhD Position in Hydrological modelling in the context of forest ecosystems and climate change

Summary of PhD Program:

As PhD-candidate in this position you will be engaged in the large and collaborative project MW³ (Standardized monitoring of growth responses of important forest tree species to climatic extreme events) that is funded by WaldKlimaFonds and aims at developing a forest monitoring system to detect growth responses of important forest ecosystems in Central Europe to climatic extreme events. Within this project, the PhD project deals with the characterization of the impact of climatic extreme events on the water balance of forest ecosystems.

2. Fully Funded PhD Position in Scaling of tape casting processes to produce oxide-ceramic-separators for next generation batteries

Summary of PhD Program:

Future battery technologies are urgently needed to make electromobility and home storage even cheaper, safer and more powerful. Solid-state batteries based on oxide-ceramic Li-ion conductors (electrolyte) are the most promising approach for significantly improving safety and performance. However, the ceramic materials must be manufactured using industrial processes and integrated into full cells. To keep costs as low as possible, thin separator layers are produced by film casting and assembled with a polymer-based cathode to form a battery cell. However, in order to produce a battery with the highest possible energy density and to make the process as economical as possible, various fundamental issues still need to be resolved.

3. Fully Funded PhD Position in Development of Carbon Molecular Sieves for the Separation of CO2 from Gas Mixtures

Summary of PhD Program:

To limit the impact of global warming, measures for the removal and subsequent reuse or permanent storage of CO2 are urgently required. For the removal of CO2, there are several technologies available. For example, CO2 can be selectively adsorbed on a suitable adsorbent material. A typical class of materials are carbon molecular sieves. Molecular sieves are materials with extremely narrow pores, which allow to separate gas molecules by their size. In this work, carbon molecular sieves shall be optimized regarding the adsorption selectivity and capacity for CO2 adsorption. This PhD project is part of the excellence cluster “Fuel Science Center”. The aim is to synthesize and evaluate climate neutral fuels from biomass or CO2.

4. Fully Funded PhD Position in Nanostructured Catalyst Preparation

Summary of PhD Program:

You will be part of the “Novel Catalyst Design” department, headed by Prof. Dr. Marc Ledendecker. The department focuses on the fabrication of metal-based, inorganic catalysts for the global energy transition. We use many different nanoparticles to fabricate highly active supported catalysts. Specifically, this dissertation focuses on the preparation of platinum-based and iridium oxide-based catalysts for the acidic water splitting reaction as used in polymer-electrolyte membrane units. You will simultaneously have the opportunity to do your PhD at the Technical University of Munich (TUM) (incl. graduate school) and also use the infrastructure of TUM.

5. Fully Funded PhD Position in Synthesis Automation

Summary of PhD Program:

You will be part of the Novel Catalyst Design department, headed by Prof. Dr. Marc Ledendecker. The department focuses on the fabrication of metal-based, inorganic catalysts for the global energy transition. We use many different nanoparticles to fabricate highly active supported catalysts. This PhD thesis specifically focuses on automating the synthesis route of e.g. platinum based and iridium oxide based catalysts for acidic water splitting reaction as used in polymer electrolyte membrane units. At the same time, you will have the opportunity to do your PhD at the Technical University of Munich (TUM) (incl. graduate school) and also to use the infrastructure of TUM.

6. Fully Funded PhD Position in Investigation of Biomass Fractionation Techniques for Cellulose Fiber Production from non-wood Biomass

Summary of PhD Program:

Would you like to contribute to solutions to climate change and resource scarcity? Work with us at the Institute of Bio- and Geosciences – Plant Sciences (IBG-2). We develop novel bioeconomy concepts for the intensification and sustainability of plant production as well as the use of the produced biomass in integrated biorefinery processes. The IBG-2 has a globally leading position in plant phenotyping, focusing on dynamic plant-environment interaction combined with technology development, engineering, digitization and bioinformatics.

One key aspect of the research at the IBG-2 targets alternative biomass, cell wall and secondary metabolite biochemistry and its interaction with biomass conversion techniques in integrated biorefinery processes. Through our work we target the development of plants and processes for future climate and production conditions, while reducing the environmental footprint.

7. Fully Funded PhD Position in Application of digital biomarkers and machine learning for prediction of clinical symptoms

Summary of PhD Program:

As PhD student you will be responsible for patient evaluation in an ongoing clinical study collecting digital biomarkers in patients with Parkinson’s disease as well as support digital biomarker deployment in a planned clinical studies in oncology patients. In parallel, you will work on development of analysis pipelines for digital biomarker data and apply machine learning algorithms and advanced statistical methods to relevant clinical neuroscience questions. In addition, working in a team you will contribute to the further development of a digital biomarker platform allowing for collection of sensor-based data in real-life (i.e. using smartphone-embedded sensors).

8. Fully Funded PhD Position in Stochastic Predictive Optimization for the Electrical Grid

Summary of PhD Program:

In response to the urgent demands posed by climate change in an increasingly global economy and in addition to the goal of reducing dependence on imported energy sources and raw materials, the European energy system is considering a shift from an energy system based on fossil fuels that relies on large power plants, to a dynamic, supply- and demand-driven approach, often organized in local energy communities where renewable energy is the main source.
