WHAT IS THE SHORTAGE OCCUPATION LIST?
The SOL is a list of roles in the UK that, according to the British government, are deemed to be in short supply.
Under the new points-based immigration system, all non-UK resident workers must apply for a visa to come to the UK to work. The primary route is through a skilled worker visa, which replaces the Tier 2 (General) visa, and requires applicants to attain 50 mandatory points and 20 tradeable points.
For more information on how to make a skilled worker visa application, take a look at our skilled worker visa page.
Skilled Worker visa: shortage occupations.
Check which jobs are on the shortage occupations list in each area of the UK.
If your job is on the list, you can be paid 80% of the job’s usual going rate to qualify for a Skilled Worker visa.
The annual salaries for these jobs are based on a 37.5-hour working week. They must be pro-rated for other working patterns, based on the weekly working hours stated by your employer.
There’s a different list of shortage occupations for some jobs if you work in healthcare or education.
If you do not know your job’s occupation code, you can search for your job in the ONS occupation coding tool.
