ABOUT THE UNIVERSITY OF CAPE TOWN
On South Africa’s southwest coast sits Cape Town, an undeniably beautiful city. From brightly painted facades and Afro-chic interiors to striking street art, vitality flourishes in Cape Town. If you’re majoring in the social sciences or are passionate about community, you’ll love the volunteer projects in local townships promoting ecological conservation, criminal justice, and literacy. Expand on field courses in marine biology with a trip on your own to Walker Bay for land-based whale watching. Hike or take a cable car to the top of Table Mountain to see the incredible 360-degree view of Cape Town
DATES AND ELIGIBILITY
Program requirements are about helping you find your best match in a new academic setting abroad. As a University of California (UC) program, requirements are carefully set to ensure you can access as many programs as possible. At the same time, eligibility will help you narrow the choices and find a program where you can succeed and thrive. Here’s some basic criteria to start.

REQUIREMENTS
The following are minimum requirements to participate in this program. Some requirements are set by the host country, the host university, or third-party providers. Most requirements must be met at the time you apply. However, you have until departure to meet class level and language requirements. If you have questions, a study abroad advisor on campus can help.
ACADEMICS
Fields of Study: Humanities, Science, Social Sciences
The academic component of this program is a combination of the full-time (35-40 hours per week) internship and an integrated course that culminates in a written paper.
Your internship placement may be at an innovative start-up, a global or multinational company, or a nonprofit organization. You can choose from a variety of industry sectors, including:
- Communications: Advertising, marketing, public relations, design, or media
- Technology: Software, hardware, finance tech, mobile apps, or e-commerce
- Business: Information technology
- Community development: Economic planning, NGOs, microfinance, public health, social entrepreneurship, or social work
- Health sciences: Nutrition, food justice, or public health
UNIQUE STUDY OPPORTUNITIES
- Explore the professional working world of Cape Town through organizational site visits, industry networking events, and guest lectures.
- Take part in professional workshops to gain international business, networking, and interviewing skills.
- Develop effective intercultural skills through a personal development plan.

COURSES AND CREDIT
REQUIREMENTS WHILE ABROAD
To successfully complete this program:
- Take a full-time course of study: One internship course for a total of 9 UC quarter/6 UC semester units.
- You may take the course for a letter grade or pass/no pass.
CURRENT PROGRAM COURSES
This internship program includes an integrated academic course, held as a weekly seminar. The course is held online, meets once a week, and includes readings and assignments that require a work plan and ongoing reflection. At the end of the seminar, you’ll write a capstone paper.

ACADEMIC CULTURE
Following the CIEE and host organization’s protocols, you’ll adopt professional manners and dress appropriately throughout your internship.
GRADES
You will earn direct UC credit and grades for all coursework. Grades for this program are typically available in mid-October.
Assessment occurs via assignments and activities related to the academic seminar:
- Online discussion forums
- Small group peer coaching
- Reflective papers
- Individual or group presentations
- Analysis of readings
- An informational interview and internship work plan
- Feedback from an internship supervisor
Internship supervisors and students each provide written evaluations of progress towards goals.
