About ILO

The ILO is a United Nations agency that sets labor standards, develops policies, and devises programs promoting decent work for all. It was founded in 1919 as part of the Treaty of Versailles that ended World War I.

Headquartered in Geneva, Switzerland, the ILO has 187 member states as of 2023. It has a unique tripartite structure, with representatives from governments, employers, and workers. This structure allows the ILO to develop international labor standards in the form of Conventions and Recommendations that reflect the diverse perspectives of its constituents.

The ILO’s primary focus is on promoting rights at work, encouraging decent employment opportunities, enhancing social protection, and strengthening dialogue on work-related issues. Its major areas of work include employment, social protection, labor rights, and social dialogue. The organization has achieved notable successes, such as the adoption of the Abolition of Forced Labour Convention and the Minimum Age Convention.

In recognition of its contributions to social justice, the ILO was awarded the Nobel Peace Prize in 1969. As a leading global authority on labor issues, the ILO plays a vital role in shaping policies and improving working conditions worldwide, ensuring that the perspectives of workers, employers, and governments are all represented.
