There is no doubt that studying abroad is on the wish-list of so many students across the globe. With opportunities to study abroad being all over the internet, the real question becomes, Is studying abroad really all that? What is it really like? Is there a side to it that we may not be aware of? Just like any other opportunity you may come across, studying overseas has its pros and cons. Let`s go through the basics together to help you make a  well informed decision.

Studying abroad in simple terms is pursuing your education in a foreign country. Here are the advantages:

You have the chance to enrol at  the world`s top institution and that affords you a quality degree. You are no longer limited by the institutions in your home country as you can now look further.

  • You get to learn new cultures and languages

Every country has a unique culture and you get to explore a culture other than your own. You may also get the chance to learn a new language. Real mastery of a foreign language comes by using it daily. Diversity is beautiful and worth experiencing.

  • Access to new opportunities

You get the chance to make international connections that could lead to internships or jobs. You can make friends from across the globe and also build a strong network as you embark into the corporate world.

  • It is an Immigration Route

While others may choose to return home after the period of study, you can still stay and build your career there. A number of countries have reduced the immigration requirements if you have studied there and want to stay and work there afterwards.

  • It can be expensive

Cost is one of the main concerns of studying abroad. Costs may arise from documentation, travelling, living expenses and tuition itself. Most countries however may provide aid an student loans to foreign students. A part time job could also help.

  • Language Barrier

In some countries, lecture may be conducted in the native language which you are supposed to master. Learning a foreign language is not an easy task and it takes time. Proficiency takes time and practice. It is best to enrol in an English college. 

  • Home sick

It is very likely that you will become homesick at some point. Homesick for your friends as well as your family and even your country. If you’re there for a longer program, you could miss out on holidays and birthdays and other important family events too. Travelling home frequently can be quite expensive

  • Culture Shock

It can be a bit unsettling considering the diversity of cultures around the globe. You could find some to be quite disturbing. Between finding your way through a new

city and meeting new people, it is quite a lot to take in! However, taking it slow and working with your support group at your new college can be a lifesaver.
