Program Overview

The Commonwealth  Scholarships for study in the UK is an important feature on the academic calendars of citizens of developing Commonwealth countries across the world.  The Scholarships are given to talented individuals with the potential to make a positive impact on the global stage.

The UK Foreign, Commonwealth & Development Office (FCDO) funds the Commonwealth Scholarships with the aim of contributing to the UK’s international development aims and wider overseas interests, supporting excellence in UK higher education, and sustaining the principles of the Commonwealth.

Who can apply?

To apply for a Commonwealth Scholarship, you must be a citizen or permanent resident of a Commonwealth country. You will still be eligible if you are a refugee or a British-protected person.

You also need to have an undergraduate honors degree of at least upper second class (2:1). If you wish to study for a Ph.D., you will need an appropriate master’s degree too.

Finally, you must be unable to afford to study in the UK without a scholarship. The eligibility criteria for each type of scholarship and fellowship vary.

All Commonwealth Scholarships are part-funded by UK host universities. In this article, we highlight some of the top universities in the UK which are hosting the Commonwealth Scholarships for the 2023 academic year. 

What types of awards are available?

The Commonwealth Scholarships Commission offers:

• Commonwealth Ph.D. Scholarships (for least developed countries and fragile states)
• Commonwealth Split-site Scholarships (for low and middle-income countries)
• Commonwealth Master’s Scholarships

• Commonwealth Shared Scholarships
• Commonwealth Distance Learning Scholarships

• Commonwealth Ph.D. Scholarships (for high-income countries)
• Commonwealth Medical Fellowships
• Commonwealth Professional Fellowships

What financial benefits are provided?

Most scholarships are fully funded which means that, as well as covering your tuition fees, you will also receive your airfare to and from the UK.

You get also a living allowance to support you while you are in the UK during the duration of the scholarship.

The host university contributes 20% of the overseas tuition fee. This allows the Commonwealth Scholarships Commission to increase the number of awards available to citizens of least-developed and middle-income countries.
