About UNDP

The United Nations Development Programme (UNDP) is the United Nations agency responsible for promoting sustainable development and reducing poverty worldwide. Established in 1965, it operates in over 170 countries and territories, working with governments, civil society organizations, and the private sector to help countries achieve their development goals.

The primary focus of the UNDP is to support countries in eradicating poverty, reducing inequality, and achieving sustainable development. It provides technical expertise, policy advice, and financial resources to help countries implement development projects and programs. The UNDP’s work covers various areas, including governance, poverty reduction, climate change, disaster recovery, gender equality, and sustainable development.

The UNDP is guided by the United Nations’ Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs), a set of 17 goals adopted by UN member states in 2015. These goals aim to address global challenges such as poverty, hunger, health, education, gender equality, clean energy, and environmental sustainability by 2030. The UNDP aligns its efforts with the SDGs and supports countries in integrating the goals into their national development plans.

In addition to its project-based work, the UNDP also produces research and analysis on development issues, promotes policy dialogue, and advocates for sustainable development at the global level. It plays a coordinating role within the United Nations system and works closely with other UN agencies, international organizations, and development partners to maximize its impact.

The UNDP is governed by the United Nations Development Group (UNDG), which brings together various UN agencies working on development issues. The Administrator of the UNDP, appointed by the United Nations Secretary-General, leads the organization’s operations and represents it at the global level.

Overall, the UNDP plays a vital role in supporting countries’ efforts to achieve sustainable and inclusive development, working towards a future where no one is left behind
