Using The Google Interviews Tool To Help You Excel In Job Interviews

Google Inc. recently released Google Interviews, a tool that can help you excel in interviews and beat your competitors to the job. Google Interviews is basically a set of questions that guide you regards best practices, advice and tips for success during a job interview process.  Although these tools were meant to prepare candidates shortlisted for interviews at Google, many human resources and recruitment specialists agree the tools can help anyone prepare for job interviews at any other organisation or company.

Find connections between job listing and your resume

According to Google, the first important thing any prospect candidate should do is find connections between the job advertised and their own resume.  Where does your resume fit into the job listing, and how strong is the fit? Is there a way you can strengthen the connection between your resume and the vacancy requirements?

Answering these questions as diligently as possible is the first step to preparing for the job. The reason for that is simple: the interviewer will stick to their job listing requirements, and try to see where you fit into the requirements, not the other way round.

Focus on data

Interviews are now a science on its own, and data is key. According to Google, data and figures help the interviewer easily grasp who you are and what value you can add to the company if given the job. For example, it is not just sufficient to cite your previous achievement as having helped raise sales at your previous company. According to Google, a good answer could be: “I helped raise sales by 43 percent inside three months by building a sales and marketing app.”

In so doing, you are adding flesh to your answer by a) telling the interviewer the exact measurement of your achievement (43 percent), b) the time frame you achieved that (3 months), and c) exactly how that success was achieved.  Vague responses to interview questions do not help your cause, moreso nowadays when the competition for available jobs is getting stiff.

Be ready with questions 

Google says a good candidate also comes to the interview with their own questions. Instead of just going to get asked questions, have your own questions you’d like to ask the interviewer when you’re given that opportunity.  Google says asking your own questions shows you care about the prospective employer and the position you’re applying for. It also shows you would have done your bit to research about the company. 

Your past experiences are important 

Google Interviews reminds that most candidates easily forget to mention their past experiences, and this should not be encouraged. Your past experiences and wins, no matter how small they might appear to you, are important to the interviewer who is trying to understand your before handing your the new job.

“Tell me about a time when…” and “How would you approach the situation when…” are some of the questions interviewers ask to draw attention to your previous working experience. Utilize the opportunity to sell yourself as a great fit for the company.

Be calm, but mindful of time limitations 

The interviewer won’t have all day to hear you out, so you’ll need to be mindful that the time allocated to you is limited and inextensible.As such, keep an eye on time as it’ll fly by pretty fast the moment the interview kicks off. However, you must still remain calm, collected in your thoughts and confident as well. 

Show the interviewer your thinking

Google urges candidates to be not afraid to express their thoughts during an interview.  “Express your ideas, ask us questions, and don’t be afraid to work the problem with us,” says Google in its tips. The reason for that is that questions often make clarification easier. 

Questions also help distinguish facts from assumptions, thereby helping bring the candidate and the interviewer to the same page on the aspect in question.

Prepare for the day

A single interview means the difference between landing the job or having to start another draining job search altogether. As such, preparation is key.If the job interview is online or virtual, Google advises that you prepare your space for the possibility that a video feed might be requested. Your surroundings must be neat, professional and organised. 

Your devices such as the mic, mouse, Wi-Fi connectivity etc must be pre checked to ensure all is in perfect working order. A pen and notebook will also come in handy. Of course, dressing and physical appearance are a must check when preparing for interviews.
