United Kingdom (UK) said it issued 132,000 visas to Nigerians in the first half of this year, Jonny Baxter, British Deputy High Commissioner in Lagos, told the News Agency of Nigeriaat the weekend. Baxter, however, could not readily give the total number of applications received from Nigerians during the period.

About 132,000 Nigerians Received Visas From The UK In H1 2023.

Wow, Nigerians are flocking to the UK: “In the first half of the year, we granted approximately 132,000 visas, and these are all types of visas, including visit, work, and study visas.”We issued approximately 324,000 in the prior full year. In that year, the UK issued over three million visas, 324,000 of which were issued to Nigerians, or approximately 10%.”

This is not a topic on which I am not qualified to discuss because I am not currently writing from Nigeria. As a result, I’ll respond with this Harvard Business Review article. Yes, how can you ask someone not to leave when you’ve already taken the decision? So, no comment on this one, despite the fact that I identify it as a security threat to the nation’s economy, since we may reach a point where Nigeria will lack skilled experts to handle the economy!

On Thursday, he revealed the figure in an interview with the News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) in Lagos.

Mr Baxter, on the other hand, was unable to provide the overall number of applications received from Nigerians throughout the period.

The United Kingdom issued some 132,000 visas to Nigerians in the first half of the year, Jonny Baxter, British Deputy High Commissioner in Lagos, told the News Agency of Nigeria (NAN).

“We issued approximately 324,000 in the previous full year.” In that year, the UK awarded around three million visas, 324,000 of which were granted to Nigerians, or almost 10% of the total.

“When you consider Nigeria’s population in comparison to the rest of the world, that’s actually a higher proportion of Nigerians taking up those visas and coming to the UK, which I think is a good thing.”

“The UK has a large number of Nigerian students, and Nigeria ranks second only to India in terms of foreign students in the UK.”

“We welcome and value the many Nigerians who come to the UK to study or settle, so long as they do so legally, and it is critical that the country’s rules are followed and respected,” he said.

Mr. Baxter stated that a revision in the rules regarding students bringing relatives was required due to an international problem.

“In 2019, Nigerian students studying in the United Kingdom brought 1,500 dependents with them.” That number had climbed to 52,000 dependents by 2022/2023, a significant increase.

” Nigeria is not alone in this, as it has happened in many other countries, and this shift in dependency is a global challenge.”

“It is not surprising that a country, Britain in this case, that is facing such a change in the number of people coming into the country would want to look at the policy and change and amend it.”

“This is not a case of saying we don’t want students to come; we absolutely want students to come, and the new policy would take effect in January 2024.”
He explained that the UK government routinely analyzes its visa fees, noting that increments are taken when necessary.

“The British government has decided that because of the cost of processing visas, those costs that people applying for visas must pay should go up as well.”

“The other thing that I think is probably not often recognized is that some of those people who are going to the UK and are in some limited circumstances will access services when they are in the UK, and those services cost money.”

“As a result, a portion of the money collected from visa fees will be used to pay for services that, in certain circumstances, some people may require while in the country.” So, for me, that’s a plus.

“But I completely understand why we need to explain it so people understand why we’re increasing,” he remarked.
He recommended the public to always apply for a visa well in advance of their planned travels, emphasizing that visas are granted through processes and time limitations.
