What is the UN International, Impartial,, and Independent Mechanism (IIIM)?
The UN International, Impartial and Independent Mechanism (IIIM) is a body established by the United Nations General Assembly in December 2016. Its primary function is to support accountability efforts for the most serious crimes committed during the Syrian conflict.
The IIIM was created in response to the lack of a specialized mechanism to collect, preserve, and analyze evidence of crimes committed in Syria. Its objective is to facilitate the investigation and prosecution of individuals responsible for war crimes, crimes against humanity, and genocide in Syria, regardless of the affiliation of the perpetrators.
