Program Overview

Canada Digital Nomad Visa: In June 2023, the previous Canadian Immigration Minister said that Canada would be promoted as a destination for digital nomads as part of the new Tech Talent Strategy.

Although this new digital nomad plan appears to be fairly appealing, there is currently nothing remarkable about it because IRCC has yet to turn it into a full-fledged strategy.

What is Canada’s New Digital Nomad Visa?

A digital nomad, according to IRCC, is someone who can operate remotely from anywhere on the planet.

A digital nomad may migrate to Canada for up to six months while working remotely for their foreign company with only visitor status under Canadian immigration restrictions.

So this is simply a tourist visa for working professionals who are permitted to operate remotely from anywhere in the world by their individual companies/employers (outside of Canada).

The IRCC’s goal is to process digital nomad visitor visa applications within two months after receiving the complete application.

If they receive a job offer from a Canadian business, these digital nomads who originally enter Canada to work remotely will be allowed to apply for a work permit for up to three years.

They will also have a better chance of obtaining Canadian permanent status through various schemes with this useful expertise.

IRCC also claims to be working (not clear if this is true) with both public and commercial partners to investigate whether new policies are needed to entice digital nomads to Canada.

Canada Digital Nomad Visa Requirements

As of now, there are no specific requirements for digital nomad visa other than the above outlined theoretical information on who may fit this.

Currently, digital nomads can apply for a normal Canada visitor visa with supporting documentation of their current job outside Canada and no objection certificate or proof that their company allows them to work remotely from anywhere in the world.

This may let them fall under the category of digital nomad, but there are no specific or official requirements yet outlined by the IRCC.

Even for a normal visitor or tourist visa, providing proof of your current job makes your case stronger as compared to unemployed individuals outside Canada.

What is digital nomad?

Digital nomads are individuals who travel freely while working remotely via technology and the internet.

Typically, these individuals have few material possessions and work remotely from temporary housing, hotels, cafés, public libraries, co-working spaces, or recreational vehicles, using Wi-Fi, smartphones, or mobile hotspots to access the Internet.
