Program Overview

The UNHCR, or UN Agency for Refugees, is in charge of defending those who are compelled to leave war and persecution throughout the world by offering life-saving relief including housing, food, and water to secure their fundamental rights, safety, and dignity.

We ceaselessly seek to improve the lives of the 89.3 million forcibly displaced people around the world, with 18,879 women and men working in 137 nations.

Our committed and qualified staff members operate around the clock in a variety of capacities, such as legal defense, social services, government relations, and health. Our staff members are proud to work for UNHCR and committed to having a positive effect despite the difficulties they occasionally confront.

Why work for the UNHCR?

During a time when worldwide forced displacement is at an all-time high, our committed staff members work to protect and aid those who are escaping conflict and persecution. A wide range of specialist abilities are brought by our coworkers, including knowledge in the administration, community services, public affairs, health, and other fields.

Including people with disabilities

You can make a note in your application form if you have a disability and anticipate that the hiring process will provide issues for you.
There are opportunities to indicate any health conditions you may have and explain any necessary adjustments relating to disability during the recruitment rounds.

It is not necessary to provide this information. It will be handled with strict confidentiality and used only to learn how to support you more effectively during the hiring process.

Candidates with impairments shall be accommodated as best as possible and as needed upon request.

All candidates will be evaluated based on their ability to meet the requirements for each job in terms of experience, abilities, and education.

Diversity

The UNHCR staff represents a wide range of ethnicities, cultures, languages, and viewpoints. UNHCR strives to maintain and strengthen this diversity in order to provide equitable opportunities and an inclusive working environment for its whole staff.

All qualified candidates are urged to apply, regardless of race, color, sex, national origin, age, religion, disability, sexual orientation, or gender identity.

Location

Internships are available in the UNHCR headquarters in Geneva, the Global Service Centres in Amman, Budapest, and Copenhagen, as well as field country offices. Interns may telework within or outside of their nation of duty station, with the agreement of their managers.

Internships are made available based on the needs of offices and their capabilities to receive, supervise, and deliver relevant assignments to interns.

Placement length

Internships can begin at any time of year and typically last two to six months, with the option of being extended for up to eight months.

Allowance for food and local transportation, as well as travel expenses

Interns who do not receive financial support from a third party will be given a stipend to help cover the costs of meals, local transit, and living expenses.

Unless otherwise provided or paid for by their sponsoring entities, UNHCR will compensate interns working from a location outside the nation of the duty station for return travel costs to/from the duty station using the most economical route available, regardless of the length of the voyage.

It is the intern’s obligation to get a visa and pay any associated visa fees. UNHCR can assist with the necessary documentation.

Medical coverage

Before beginning an internship with UNHCR, candidates must arrange medical insurance and provide documentation of valid medical insurance for the duration of the contract to UNHCR.

UNHCR assumes no responsibility for any costs associated with interns’ medical insurance, nor does the agency support the costs of interns’ medical evacuation. Interns working in areas with insufficient medical facilities should verify that their medical insurance includes emergency medical evacuation.

Furthermore, the health insurance selected by interns should provide the necessary geographical coverage for both accident and illness.
