TWAS was created in 1983 by a prominent group of scientists from the developing countries, under the direction of Pakistani physicist and Nobel winner Abdus Salam. They all believed that through improving their research and technical capabilities, developing countries could combat issues like hunger, disease, and poverty. Italian scientists and political figures have contributed significantly to the Academy since its foundation.

It was formally established in 1985 under the name Third World Academy of Sciences, with United Nations Secretary-General Javier Pérez de Cuéllar present. TWAS had 42 elected fellows at its founding, including nine Nobel laureates. Later, the name underwent two changes: in 2004 it became “The Academy of Sciences for the Developing World,” and in 2012 it became “The World Academy of Sciences for the Advancement of Science in Developing Countries.” Currently, TWAS is made up of 1,296 elected fellows from over 100 nations, including some of the most accomplished scientists and engineers in the world, including 11 Nobel laureates.

These fellows are scientists from rich countries whose work has had a substantial impact on the global South, with about 84 percent of them coming from poor countries. The core of the Academy’s work is its TWAS fellows.

TWAS provides more than 600 scholarships each year to scientists from the developing countries who are pursuing PhD degrees and postdoctoral research in collaboration with various organizations. Additionally, it awards renowned prizes and honors for scientific achievements in underdeveloped nations. The Academy also promotes visiting scientists, funds regional and international science conferences, and awards about $1 million in research grants to individuals and research groups each year.
