Program Overview

Cyber Security Technician under the direction of management, the incumbent provides technical support in the area of cybersecurity and the application of tools and processes required to protect PCC’s cyber assets and its user community. The incumbent performs network and system risk management support activities, including monitoring firewall logs and network activity for unusual or concerning behavior.

The incumbent assists with analyzing and troubleshooting network traffic and performance issues, and reports or escalates issues to management as required. The Cybersecurity Technician helps maintain existing security related tools and systems and provides technical assistance to users and others in the College.

Typical Duties and Responsibilities

  1. Monitors firewall and other relevant security logs to review for threats, anomalies, intrusions and/or abnormal connection behavior. Investigates, reports and escalates issues as required to Cybersecurity staff and management.
  2. Troubleshoots network performance or network security issues. Analyzes network traffic, responds to problem tickets and resolves service requests.
  3. Participates in incident response, computer forensics, data preservation and investigations related to network breaches and/or unauthorized access of data.
  4. Supports regular and special reporting and analysis, including reports of vulnerabilities, risks, control deficiencies, remediation strategies, and performance metrics.
  5. Configures and tests security related technologies. Troubleshoots and corrects security and data related problems.
  6. Performs hardware and software upgrades and documents configurations and system specifications.
  7. Helps maintain configuration records and documentation, including security operations and maintenance, incident control, cyber incident response procedures, and other standards, policies, and procedures.
  8. Provides security related technical support to users and assists with the research, testing, evaluation, and implementation of security tools, systems, and processes.
  9. Assists with College risk and compliance management and strategy through application of PCC policies conforming with security frameworks.
  10. Reviews external threat intelligence feeds from cybersecurity agencies; sends alerts and coordinates with responsible parties to patch high risk vulnerabilities.
  11. Maintains, monitors, and modifies security tools, systems and processes according to standard and department policies and procedures, and automates wherever feasible using programming languages such as Python.
  12. Supports the implementation of effective key service platforms, including on-premises physical and virtual cloud environments.
  13. Performs other duties as assigned.

Job Description

The Cyber Security Operations Technician is an instrumental component in our Proactive approach to technology management, and success for us and our clients. As part of our Automations team, the Cyber Security Operations Technician will design, deploy, monitor, assess, report, and support all aspects of our security stack. The ultimate goal of this position is to lower the risk of a cyber incident impacting our clients’ businesses, while also improving the stability of their networks.

In addition, the Cyber Security Operations Technician will design and deliver training content and sessions to internal and external parties to help raise awareness of the risks, and opportunities facing us and our clients. Developing and maintain robust Cyber Security practices across a diverse client base requires the coordination and support of multiple product vendors and the Cyber Security Operation Technician will continuously engage with these vendors to report problems, suggest enhancements, and improve overall security within these environments.

The essence of this role is to think and act proactively to increase protection and lower risk for us and our clients. However, the Cyber Security Operations Technician will also provide reactive support services to our team and our clients in the case of a security incident to investigate, remediate, and avoid future incidents. The lessons learned from one client or incident should be distilled into practices that can be shared and implemented across our entire client base.

While a strong understanding of Cyber Security is valuable, this role also requires the ability to think creatively, to solve problems affecting multiple parties, and to communicate extremely well. Team collaboration and awareness of ongoing projects, changes, and solutions deployments are critically important to be successful in this role.

Primary functions of the Cyber Security Operations Technician:

  • Stay up-to-date with security trends, vulnerabilities, and best practices.
  • Assist in the continuous improvement of security operations processes and procedures for us and our clients.
  • Educate our teams and clients about imminent risks and threats.
  • Configure, monitor, analyze, and respond to security alerts generated by the security stack.
  • Triage security alerts and incidents.
  • Collaborate with the Operations Manager and the support teams to ensure effective incident response.
  • Conduct investigations and initial analysis of potential security incidents.
  • Follow established incident response procedures and workflows.
  • Coordinate incident response efforts with cross-functional teams.
  • Document and maintain accurate records of security incidents and their resolutions.

Qualification and Experience required:

  • Scripting Logic and Basic Scripting Skills (Batch, Powershell, etc.)
  • Strong foundation in computer, server, network, and cloud services configurations and operations(primarily Microsoft based platforms)
  • Proven ability to analyze, assess, and resolve technology problems at scale

Subject Matter Expert in:

  • Backup Solutions (Offsite and onsite solutions)
  • Security Solutions (Endpoint Protection, Phishing Simulators, SSO/SAML Solutions, etc.)
  • Network Technology (Firewalls, Switches, Access Points, etc.)
  • Cloud Solutions (365 Exchange, Azure, SharePoint, OneDrive, etc.)
  • Infrastructure Solutions (Servers, NAS/SAN, etc.)
