Working with the Dubai-based NAME Media Coordinator, the Regional Communication Centre in Cairo (RCC/C), delegations and the Regional Resources Network, the successful candidate will reinforce relationships with journalists and other influencers across the Arabic-speaking markets with a view to profiling the ICRC brand, including mandate and modalities, and promoting ICRC messages on our institutional priorities and operational activities and concerns.


Drawing on existing experience and relationships, the successful candidate will network with a range of journalists in Amman, Beirut, Cairo and beyond on NAME, Sudan, and Libya-related issues, manage media queries and set up interviews and other media or public-facing opportunities. S/he will provide spokesmanship support to NAME delegations, Sudan, Libya and Arabic-speaking North Africa. 


The global Arabic-speaking spokesperson, the lead media figure for the ICRC in Arabic-speaking contexts, will be asked to work long hours to respond to media demands at moments of high interest. Travel of up to 25 per cent of the year will be expected. Native-level written and spoken Arabic is required.
 

Accountabilities & Functional responsibilities

  • Acts as an Arabic-language spokesperson, providing information to media on the ICRC’s work and humanitarian concerns, particularly on issues relevant to NAME, Sudan, and Libya. 
  • Builds relations with regional and global media based in Amman, Beirut, and Cairo. 
  • Supports delegations in NAME and Arabic-speaking Africa to build and reinforce their media networks and build the capacities of their spokespeople.  
  • Deploys to ICRC locations within NAME and Arabic-speaking Africa, particularly during crises and significant media moments, as a media liaison and content focal point. 
  • Supports drafting of speaking points, news releases, defensive lines and other media and digital distribution products. Distributes relevant information to media through CISION, Muck Rack and other tools.
  • Supports the global media management of crises in Arabic-speaking contexts, including media requests, messaging and coordination. Provides interviews, quotes and briefings for journalists on operations and issues of concern, ensuring that the ICRC’s public position is known and understood.
  • In line with institutional priorities and the Arabic market media strategy, pitch story ideas, content, and interviews. 
  • Working with the COM teams in delegations, the NAME Media Coordinator, the Strategic Communication Advisor in Amman and the regional communication centre in Cairo, contributes to identifying and developing a network of ICRC field voices for interviews and features that showcase the diversity of our staff and portfolio of work.
  • In the institutional strategy and the regional strategic frameworks, contributes to the workstream led by ICRC’s regional communications centre in Cairo to develop Arabic-language media/digital campaigns around crucial thematic issues and contexts.
  • Carry out any other relevant tasks as required, and mutually agree with your line manager.

Requirements

  • University degree in a relevant discipline such as political science, international relations, journalism, communication management or public relations.
  • Computer skills and familiarity with digital communication tools.
  • Minimum eight years of work experience in media, media relations or content generation.
  • Excellent written and oral communication skills in Arabic and English. French is a plus. 
  • Excellent public communication skills and deep knowledge of the media environment.
  • Ability to travel up to 25 per cent of the year.
  • ICRC experience is an asset.
